2010: Is the time finally right for municipal wireless?

Many high profile municipal wireless initiatives have failed in the past, for example, we recently featured the  news about the City of  Riverside deciding to take over their free public Wi-Fi network from AT&T because AT&T no longer wanted it!

Our latest article re-examines the landscape in 2010,  and we find that availability of unlicensed spectrum, smart antenna technologies, and maturity of existing technologies have helped significantly reduce network deployment costs.

In  addition, municipalities have learned the lessons from the past that municipal wireless should be offered as a service as opposed to simply being a mechanism to augment revenue streams.
